Residential building collapses in Mumbai, death toll rises to 17 Last Updated : 26 Jul 2017 10:34:51 AM IST 17 dead in Mumbai building collapse
Seventeen people, including a three-month old baby, have been killed, 28 rescued under debris of a residential building that collapsed in Mumbai's Ghatkopar o Tuesday morning.
A four-storey building at Damodar Park on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg collapsed on Tuesday at around 10:45am.
According to the reports, the beam of the a private nursing home, housed on the ground floor of the ill-fated structure, collapsed due to heavy rains in the city. And as a result, the whole building came crashing.
A society meeting was also organised late Monday night and the residents were asked to evacuate the building but the instructions were not followed.
There are reports that the building was figured on the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation's list of dangerous buildings and had also been served an evacuation notice six months ago.
Fourteen fire engines, BMC rescue teams, NDRF and SDRF teams, rescue vans, ambulances, JCBs and metal cutters rushed to the spot.Two firemen have also injured in the mishap.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an enquiry and asked Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to submit a report within 15 days.Rescue operation is still underway.
