At least 15 wagons of a goods train, loaded with coal, derailed on Thursday in Haryana's Ambala district and fell into the bed of Markanda river, railway officials said.
The driver and the guard of the train were said to be safe.
Traffic on the Ambala-Saharanpur section was disrupted following the incident. Efforts were being made to remove the derailed bogies and repair the damaged bridge, the officials said.
The cause of the accident, which took place while the train was crossing the bridge, is not known.
Divisional Railway Manager Dinesh Kumar and other officials rushed to the spot following the accident.
Ambala city is about 45 km from Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.
