Stalin demands loan waiver for TN farmers Last Updated : 01 Apr 2017 01:59:08 PM IST DMK acting President M.K. Stalin
DMK Treasurer and acting President M.K. Stalin on Saturday met farmers from Tamil Nadu who are protesting in the national capital for drought relief funds and demanded their loans be waived.
The Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Stalin demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi provide relief to the agitating farmers.
Stalin told reporters: "Just as the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) promised farmer loan waiver in Uttar Pradesh in its poll manifesto recently, it should also promise the same to Tamil Nadu farmers."
Apart from Stalin, CPI (Communist party of India) National Secretary D. Raja, DMK MPs Tiruchi Siva and T.K.S. Elangovan were also present.
The farmers' protest action continued for the 19th day on Saturday at the Jantar Mantar where they have been protesting with skulls of farmers who have committed suicide in the native state.
The agitators blew conch shells as one of them lay on the ground like a corpse, which symbolised farmers' suicide. Many were also seen with rats and snakes in their mouth as they demanded waiver of loans.
As per reports, more than 200 farmers have committed suicide in Tamil Nadu since the 2016 drought. The farmers have been demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre and the farm loan waiver.
