Five policemen, including two sub-inspectors were injured after a 40-year-old man attacked them with a knife at Guirim village, near Panaji, an official said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the accused hails from Maharashtra and is "mentally unstable".
The incident occurred late on Wednesday, after Miranda's wife called 100 claiming Miranda was beating her up. When a five-man police team reached the site, Miranda attacked them with a knife.
After assaulting the police, Jovelle Miranda was overpowered and beaten up by local residents from the village. Miranda, as well as the five police personnel have been admitted to the government-run Asilo hospital in Mapusa town, located around 15 km from Panaji."We have detained the accused and he is currently undergoing treatment. Our police personnel have also been hospitalised on account of stab injuries," Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudessai told reporters here.
Police sources also said that Miranda would be taken to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour in Panaji, after he is discharged from the hospital.
