'India can contribute to world in upholding the spirit of freedom of speech' Last Updated : 23 Feb 2019 02:05:52 PM IST The photo exhibition of the selected entries for the year 2018 of the International Press Photo Contest ' title=' 4th Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest '>4th Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest began in New Delhi today.
Organised by the Russian International News Agency Sputnik News and Russian Embassy, the exhibition is the first occasion when the selected entries have been exhibited in India.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Anatoly Kargapolov, Deputy Chief of Russian embassy.
Speaking on the occassion Anatoly Kargapolov praised the long rooted tradition of Indian journalism.
“India with its long rooted tradition of journalism has a lot to contribute to the world in upholding the spirit of freedom of speech, human rights and justice,” Deputy Chief of the Russian Embassy, Mr. Anatoly Kargapolov said while inaugurating the event.
In the times of digital revolution and video content overwhelmingly in use in media, the frames of news photographers enchants the news world even more and it fascinates and enriches a reader. The importance of photographs and moments captured in lens is for ever, Group Editorial Director of Indian Today Group, Mr Raj Chengappa said on the occasion.
The event was inaugurated in the august presence of Sangeeta Goel, Additional Director General, All India Radio, renowned Sculptor & prsident of AIFACS Gallery Prof Biman B Das, Photographer & Film Maker Benoy K Behl.
“We are proud to announce that the exhibition has finally reached India and we look forward to more young and creative photographers to participate in the contest in the coming years,” Alexander Shtol, Director of Photography, Rossiya Segodnya said on the occasion.
Stenin Photo Contest held under the aegis of the Russian Commission for UNESCO earlier exhibited photographs of the finalists in the United Nations office, New York in November 2018. Around 6000 entries by young photojournalists from 77 countries were received for the contest in last year.
“Every selected photographs in display here tell a story in itself. We feel part of the frame. Its a treat to watch them,” Anna from Ecuador, one of the visitor on the occasion said.
Selected entries of the photo contest have been exhibited till now across the world in all major cities including in Athens, Tel-Aviv, Madrid, Istanbul, Shanghai, Warsaw, Mexico, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Beirut and Budapest.
Two young Indian Photographers Amit Moulick from Kolkata and amit Kumar from Lucknow who participated in the photo contest in 2018 were awarded prizes in different categories.
The objective of the annually held Stenin Photo Contest is to promote young photographers and draw public attention to the challenges of modern photojournalism.
The competition is held as a tribute to Andrei Stenin, an experienced military Russian photojournalist who worked in such hotspots as Egypt, Syria, Libya, the Gaza Strip and other locations.
