NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind was on Thursday elected as the 14th President of India after defeating opposition nominee Meira Kumar.
The counting of votes for the Presidential election began at 11 am on Thursday and the result was declared at 5 pm. Kovind has won the election with a comfortable majority.
The former Bihar's governor, who would be the next occupant of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, will be sworn-in as the 14th President of India on July 25.
Ram Nath Kovind will be the second Dalit President of India after KR Narayanan.
It is for the first time that a BJP leader has won the Presidential election and that too with majority.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meira Kumar, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Yogi Adityanath, Mamta Banerjee and other leaders congratulated Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the President of India.
