The festival of Mahashivratri celebrates the convergence of Lord Shiva and Shakti. It is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of Hindu calendar month Maagha. On the festival of Mahashivratri, devotees offer Bael leaves or Bilva/Vilvam leaves, Bhang, Dhatura, flowers, coconut, fruits, water, cow milk and other things to Lord Shiva and keep full-day, full-night fast. Devotees also chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra dedicated to Lord "Om Namah Shivaya". There are many legends associated with Mahashivratri which include - Marriage of Shiva and Shakti, Samudra Manthan, Appearance of Shiva on Earth in form of Lingam and Ganga's descent from the heavens to the earth. Mahashivaratri also marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava' the cosmic dance.
